Grapes New Interest
Grapes, a long season crop, are often ignored in home gardens, and yet are one of the most widely produced fruits in the world. This is most important for newly planted vines in their first season when roots haven't had time to become established. The seeds from grapes, needs to go through a process called stratification to obtain a higher germination percentage. White White wine grape: ‘Seyval Blanc' (syn.'Seyve Villard 5276) wine grape: ‘Seyval Blanc' (syn.'Seyve Villard 5276) : Good resistance to powdery and downy mildew.
This system is suggested for vineyards of above-average vigor that are producing 3 pounds or more of pruned canes per vine. Wine quality is dictated mainly by the grapevines, not by the better the grapes, the better the wine. You must have some kind of support to train the vine on. When we were trying to produce wine, at the old house, we tied in each vine as it grew and then spur-pruned it each winter.
In the second season, fruiting spurs are developed every 4 to 6 inches along the vine. Unpruned grape vines get very dense, diseases get hard to control and fruit quality declines. When we came to our present house, we inherited a grape vine, planted on the front of the house, which faces south. Wine grapes can be eaten fresh or can be pulped and made into wine, whilst dessert grapes should be eaten as soon as possible after.
The best time to prune grapevines: The main pruning of a grape vine should take place in early winter with the pinching out of any new shoots, thinning and training taking place in the spring and summer months. Each year grape vines grow long shoots which not only produce the fruit of the current growing season but also produce the buds that make the next season's fruit. The first year, the grapevine should not be allowed to produce any fully matured fruits as these can damage the young vine with their weight.
The grape berry moth, native to New York State and always close by where it feeds on our common wild grapes, is our worst insect pest. If you grow a vine in a greenhouse and want to maximise the possible harvest - and I certainly do - you can establish a lattice shape by allowing side-shoots to grow unpruned and become main shoots or ‘rods' which are part of the permanent framework.
